Death Drop T-Shirt

Hey y’all! My name is Elle and I have been a parajunkie for a little while now. You may recognize me from live streams or the chat especially when animals are involved in Madison and Chris’s storytellings. I am studying wildlife science at uni and am about to head into my fourth year! In addition to my love of animals, I love drawing and this podcast. JT had mentioned making the black death sexy a few episodes back and I made it my mission to deliver so here is Yass-inia Petty-sis, the queen of the death drop and her companion, Bubonica. In case you are curious about her name, this is a play on the name of the bacteria that causes the Bubonic Plague: Yersinia pestis which is often abbreviated as Y. pestis. I am no microbiologist but here are some quick facts about Y. pestis:
According to the CDC, the WHO reports roughly 1,000 to 3,000 cases of the plague each year with an average of 5 to 15 cases occuring in the western US each year. Most of these cases are the bubonic form of the plague (CDC, 2024).
In the modern day, the bubonic plague cases typically occur in rural to semi-rural areas and people are infected when they come into contact with an infected flea or animal (CDC, 2018)
The plague and its varients, such as the bubonic and pneumonic plagues, are considered zoonotic diseases which are diseases that affect both animals and humans and can be transmitted from one to the other through direct and indirect contact. Other examples of zoonotic diseases include rabies, Lyme disease, and tuberculosis (Rahman et al., 2020).
Since tuberculosis has affected many lives of the spirits we love to talk about on the podcast, the form of tuberculosis that is the primary cause of tuberculosis in humans is a zoonotic disease. It is caused by Mycobacterium bovis that is often transmitted through contact with affected cattle, sheep, swine, etc.. The specific epithet (second part of the scientific name that specifies which individual species of the genus/first part of the scientific name) in this form of tuberculosis is bovis which indicates the type of animals that contract it which are animals in the Bovidae family or cloven-hoofed mammals (Olea-Popelka et al., 2017).
I hope you guys enjoy Yass-inia and these sick facts (pun intended)!
Best fishes!
